Child Advocates was appointed to represent 2-year-old Ricardo and 1-year-old Tomas in March 2007 after a Child Protective Services Report revealed that their mother had choked Ricardo. When she reported that "voices" told her to do so, the mother was hospitalized and diagnosed with a major post-partum depressive disorder.

Two Continents! One Heart!
It starts off like a dreadful nightly news story that happens in other places in the world to people we’ll never know. A warring African tribe attacks a neighboring tribe. In the hostilities, 17-year-old “Taban” is badly hurt, and family members are seriously injured or killed. Anxious for Taban’s survival and unable to care for him, Taban’s family scrapes together the funds to pay for the youth’s passage to the United States. With minimal English language skills, Taban arrives without a passport or papers of any kind, unable to tell his story.

Is Open Adoption coming to Pennsylvania?
The face of the modern family has been changing for decades. Today, single parents are heading up families, grandparents are raising grandchildren, adult siblings are caring for younger brothers and sisters, and gay and lesbian couples are parenting children.
Adoption, the process by which new family ties are legally forged, has had a significant role in changing the modern family. By no means new, adoption legislation was first passed in Massachusetts in 1851. The Adoption History Project offers a brief history of adoption, as well as other topics of interest for further study.
What is new in adoption in the state of Pennsylvania relates to the voluntary agreements by which adopted children can maintain ongoing contact or communication with identified members of their birth families. These agreements are soon to be legally enforceable in certain situations. On October 27, 2010, Governor Rendell signed Act 101 of 2010 into law. Act 101 is an amendment to the Adoption Act (23 Pa.C.S. Domestic Relations Chapters 21-29) and will become effective on April 25, 2011. This new law addresses not only the means by which children can maintain beneficial relationships with biological relatives, but also the broad issue of how adoptees can access medical and social history information and records related to their adoption.

The vast majority of Child Advocates’ children come to us because they lack a permanent, nurturing home environment. Over the last three years, we hit the mark in more than 90% of the cases we closed, offering these children safe, stable homes—sometimes for the first time in their young lives! We are proud to have delivered so consistently! Still, there is more to be done.

our leadership council
New Faces on our Leadership Council!
We are delighted and honored to welcome to our Leadership Council two wonderful new members whose names you know well: former Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham, partner at Archer & Greiner, and pro hockey player Darroll Powe, Center (#36) for our beloved Philadelphia Flyers. Ms. Abraham and Mr. Powe join a skillful and esteemed group of individuals who serve as an advisory group to Child Advocates and provide consultation on our efforts. We are deeply indebted to our Leadership Council and to our amazing Board of Directors who, under the leadership of Board President Len Bernstein of Reed Smith, are—in a word—unstoppable in their hard work and love for our children. We love them back!
staff update
Staff Changes
Big changes on our ace Development Team, headed by Moira Mulroney who joined us in June 2010! Moira is an attorney with years of development experience at WXPN and the Philadelphia Zoo. She also worked as Assistant District Attorney in the Legislation Unit of the Office of the District Attorney in Philadelphia.
We are sad to say good-bye to Development Officers Kristyn DiDominick and Pattie Bongiovanni who have left Child Advocates to pursue new ventures. Kristyn will be heading up development efforts at Manna on Main Street in Lansdale, PA. Pattie’s fantastic import company, BeiPiatti, offers “beautiful plates and other wonderful things,” all of them handmade in Italy. We miss these fine, creative staff members who have served us well and wish them the very best.
